For the Regionale in 2006, the zoo in Wuppertal Elberfeld was expanded by a vast area with facilities for lions and tigers. Therefore, a new entrance was designed. The new entrance building is seperated from the historical main building and adapts itself sensitively into the surrounding structures. Its sculptural shape turns the building into an attractive eye-catcher. The angular terraced shape creates a coherent entrée for the attached artificial rock landscape of the enclosures. The building stands out from the adjacent Neo-Renaissance building by its modern design and shows the new functional demands at the same time.
The ground floor contains the checkout area, a generous gift shop and a roofed area at the zoo as a meeting point for guided tours. The administration area is located on the upper floor, the adjoining rooms are situated in the basement. The visitor is visually lead into the zoo by the continous glazing of the shop situated below the overhanging upper floor.
